Ethernet not working..?

Hey, so my brother just moved out, and I moved into his room and he left me his ethernet cable so I could hook my old laptop up to the modem inside. But the cable doesnt work, I get no connection with it at all, I tried my other 10ft cable and it works fine, but it wouldn't reach. I am certain that the cable worked fine before he left since he was always using the internet, so I don't understand. lol. Do I have to update anything? I'm not too smart when it comes to this kind of stuff..

well if you get a good connection with the other cable, then the chances are that there's been some kind of damage done to the cable that was left behind. Just go and buy a new cable.
