Start a disc without the wiimote?

Hi,
I just went out and bought SSBM(gamecube) + 3 gamecube controller. I get home to find that my younger brother lost the wiimote. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to use a gamecube controller to navigate the main screen to start the disc. Any ideas? Is the wiimote essential?

i saw some chinese dude use there usb mouse to navigate threw the wii menu but iono if it will work for you
