Unlocking Sonic *Spoilers*

Hey I obviously really want to play as Sonic as soon as I can, he's the only character I want to unlock knowingly, can anyone tell what's the fastest way to unlock him?
I've heard beating the SSE [That's like 8 hours though]
I've heard X amount of VS matches [I don't want to suicide like a lot of you do]
I heard beating Classic with 10 other characters...
Can anyone confirm the classic method? I think that's how I'm going to approach it.

if you want him the fastest way i recommend clearing classic mode with 10 characters, won't take that long

Don't you start with sonic, so there is no point unlocking him, BUt you can unlock his levels, Green Hill for example
