you got phpBB, IVB, and simple machines as some of the bigger ones, each one works slightly different, and some things are special to a certain board.

i don't directly work with forums, so i can't help you any further from this point. you should have given greater detail in the first post, as simple asking for a web designer is assuming all web designers work with forums, where as i do more CMS, flash and genreal design work.
