Wii game characters

A while ago I was at some friends playing Wii bowling. The game characters looked quite realistic. A few weeks ago my wife bought us a Wii, and the only game characters in the bowling(or any other games) are the generic game characters or the animated looking Mii that you create. Where did the more realistic game characters come from? Are they a download?

Wii Sports Bowling only uses the cartoon-like Mii characters. Perhaps it was a different bowling game?
