It can’t have escaped any Nintendo fan’s notice that both news and games are in short supply for the Wii at the moment. It almost seems as if Nintendo is concentrating so hard on marketing and launching the handheld 3DS that it’s neglecting the poor old Wii. Eurogamer has a feature on this very issue, noting that Nintendo has only published two Wii titles so far this year, namely Kirby’s Epic Yarn and Mario Sports Mix, and the year ahead doesn’t look all that encouraging for Wii owners either, aside from the admittedly massive summer release of Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Granted, the release of a new Zelda game is almost enough on its own to compensate for a thin release schedule from Nintendo for the rest of the year, but even so, Eurogamer reports that IGN still managed to press Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime on the issue recently, where he fessed up to what we’ve all been thinking.
“We’ve had to effectively prepare for the launch of 3DS as well as effectively prepare for the launch of Pokemon Black and White. Candidly, we’ve pushed out some Wii launches so we can focus on our handheld business. We’re already juggling two big balls. To add a third would be a little bit challenging.”
However, Fils-Aime promised that better times are just around the corner for Wii owners, with new titles on the way, including some that will be released before E3 in June, and some that will be launched at E3. No names as yet though, with Eurogamer saying that the only other confirmed Nintendo-published releases that they know of this year so far are another Kirby game and another Rhythm Heaven game.
