Level Help: 2nd Ninja-fight

hey i'm stuck in red steel at about 60% through at the dojo level. i've gotten up to the second ninja swordfight and i can't find a tactic to win. i can't even score a hit. for some reason, my short sword isn't working and my scorpion attacks aren't either. don't know why, my nunchuk is fine, it's just they won't work.

does anyone know a tactic?

Man, I am at EXACTLY the same point in the game - and like you can hardly seem to score a hit on the guy!

Up until now I've got through most of the sword fights quite easily, but this 2nd Ninja has upped his game somewhat!

I think once I managed to dodge and then get in three hit's once to send him off balance but that's about it. I can't seem to dodge fast enough and the special moves seem to take too long to initiate..........

Yeah i know it's pretty annoying. I was kicking ass up until now. i can't even score a hit and my short sword block isn't working. can anyone help?
