Third party Lan adapter

I'm having trouble connecting my Wii online....While reading wii's customer support site I read a statement on there stating that Non nintendo made Lan adapters will not work...Is there any truth to this?...Initially,i'm thinking its just a statement made to keep the sale of Nintendo made adapters on the up and up...

I didn't even know about 3rd party lan adapters its best to stick with nintendo 3rd party stuff aren't good sometimes
