As the dust settles from Nintendo’s E3 press conference, it’s time to get our teeth into the solid facts about the Wii U’s GamePad, to give the 6.2-inch touch screen controller its official name. First up we have Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime:

Nintendo says that the GamePad has traditional buttons for gaming, as well as the touch screen and dual analog sticks, and will also function as a TV remote, with users being able to change channels or adjust the sound whether they are playing games or watching TV. Players can also move games from the TV to the GamePad, and different players can have different experiences in the same game, depending on which controller they use.

Covering the Press Conference, Cnet reports that Fils-Aimes also announced during his presentation that the Wii U will support two GamePads, contrary to previous rumours. Cnet adds that the GamePad will also have a rumble feature, an infrared transceiver, a gyroscope, and an accelerometer.

As part of its broader gaming strategy, Nintendo also announced that it's working with Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video and YouTube to bring video experiences to Wii U that will also take advantage of the second-screen integration via the GamePad.

Stay tuned for all the in-depth details about the newly announced Wii U games, this week and beyond.

The GamePad works as a TV remote?
