The Cabela’s brand will already be very familiar to Wii owners for its Activision-published series of authentic hunting games, but now Activision has decided to do something a little different with the Cabela’s franchise, and very interesting it looks too. Cabela’s Survival: Shadows of Katmai, due for release on November 1 2011 for all major consoles including the Wii, sees gamers facing non-stop challenges and the ride of a lifetime through the daunting Alaskan wilderness in an effort to complete a mysterious mission. "Every human shares the purest of instincts: survival," said David Oxford, Activision Publishing. "When those instincts kick in, its equal parts terrifying and exhilarating, and we've combined all those visceral reactions into a brand new 3rd-person adventure to make Cabela's Survival: Shadows of Katmai the most exciting Cabela's game ever!"
In the game, which comes bundled with the Top Shot Elite controller, players take on the role of bush pilot Logan James after he survives a horrific plane crash (sounds a little like a Wii version of Uncharted, but that’s no bad thing!) that leaves him stranded in a remote corner of the Alaskan high country. Injured, isolated and in the middle of a hostile wilderness, Logan is cut off from all hope of rescue, and it’s up to the player to guide him to safety in his epic battle against not just the deadly predators in the area, but the harsh elements of nature as well, including avalanches and snowstorms. Starvation is another danger, so you have to hunt to stay alive.

Armed with nothing but guns and gear found along the way, you get to trek through a variety of hostile environments, including mountain peaks, icy cliff-side trails, dense forests, frozen rivers and huge caverns. In order to stay alive in such harsh terrain, players must keep their wits about them and use all their survival skills. Sounds like it could be a great game, especially as there aren’t too many of these action-adventure type games being released for the Wii in these long months before the Wii U launches.

I was wondering why that picture showed the character attempting to shoot that hawk(?) with a measly pistol, and the survival aspect explains that.

Well, this is certainly an interesting new take on Cabela's. Let's hope they do a good job with this change.
