Question about region locked

I live in Italy so if I buy this game will I only be able to play against people in Italy or can I play against anybody in Europe?

No, to Smaug, you can vs people with PAL, which includes Australia and New Zealand.

Online is really fun. Too bad I can't fully enjoy it with a cast on my right arm.
