System linking problems!!?

Its a bit of a long story but here goes...

Sat night I had a friend come over to my house to Play through Gears of War co-op.
I borrowed my bro's 360 for this - with the idea of system linking the consoles nice and simple - playing one on the tv and the other through my monitor.
So I connected the 360s via the ethernet cable and fired them up. Tried to join a system link game and the damn things wouldn't/couldn't find each other. I tried fiddling around in various ways (connecting each 360 to a router - directly connecting them etc). So how the hell do you get 2 360s to system link...? :crazy: Anyone know?!

To get it to work;
I had to plug my 360 into my modem-router.
Connect my bro's 360 to my PC to use the wireless connection to my modem-router.
And play each other over xbox live - even though we were sitting right next to each other. (sucked)

easy...use a "crossover" ethernet cable.

the cable that came with the 360 is a "patch" cable which is
meant to be connected like:-

360>ethernet modem or
360>router / hub / switch

Yeah that's what I would have thought, unless you can get special wireless adapters or something, I know you can to connect 360 to router.. dunno about 360 to 360 mind you.

you can use the official M$ wifi adaptor to connect two 360's too.

in the network settings simply choose "ad-hoc" as opposed to
"infrastructure".

you can also use 3rd party Wireless Gaming Bridges too. Linksys, D-Link,
Netgear and Zoom make these bits of kit. I have a linksys 11Mbps wifi
bridge which has a button especially to link two consoles...obviously you
need two bridges, but it's relatively straight forward.
