ok you know in those pirate movies that those telescopes they use that look like this

most likly a Refracting telescope based on Galileo's design.

wait in the pirate movies the pirates only look at ships through these scopes but wouldnt a telescope look at space

a telescope can be used to look at anything far away. they dont have to be used to look at space
