Virtual Console and internet connections???

I've done a small bit of research, but can't find any answers on this one...

Once you purchase and download a VC game onto your Wii, does the Wii then have to be connected to the internet everytime you play the game, or is the game stored on your Wii. My internet connection is spotty, so don't want to spend the money if I can only play them when the internet decides to work.
