What are spinels for in Resident Evil 4?

Are spinels used to be combined with other objects? How many do I need?

I think you can sell them on their own, but they have greater value after combining them with another item.

Actually, spinels cannot be combined with anything. There's some rarer jewels that can be combined, but bog standard ones like spinels and the purple crystaline ones are only to be sold by itself.

they are the gems correct? if so
there are certin items you can place them in to get a HUGE value out of them
(i think there are like crowns and grails)
or you can sell them on their own for good money
