Square Enix announced today that Chrono Trigger will be arriving on the Wii’s Virtual Console on May 16. Chrono Trigger was originally released in 1995 for the SNES, and was the product of a genius development team comprising script creator Yuji Horii, who created the Dragon Quest series, Dragon Ball series creator Akira Toriyama, who was in charge of character design, as well as the Final Fantasy creators. Chrono Trigger has been hailed as one of the greatest games of all time by critics and fans alike, with its unique and multifaceted storyline, which revolutionised the world of RPGs with never-before-seen features, including an unprecedented soundtrack and multiple endings determined by sidequests and the player’s actions.

In the game, the notion of time is turned upside down as players race against it like never before, with all the decisions that they make along the way affecting past, present and future. The storyline is centred around events following the malfunctioning of a newly developed teleportation device at the Millennial Fair, resulting in the hero Crono having to travel through time to rescue his unfortunate companion from an intricate web of past and present perils. The swashbuckling adventure unveils an evil force set to destroy the world, and only Crono can stop it.

The game has multiple epic conclusions, an inspiring musical score created by Yasunori Mitsuda, and an intriguing battle system made possible by the unique combination of the Active Time Battle (ATB) system and Tech skills.

Can’t wait?! Don’t worry, you only have to get through the weekend before you can get your hands on it!
