Let’s put the virtual flags at half mast tonight, gamers. Or at least, start preparing them for October 31st, when the Famicom (more familiarly known as the Nintendo Entertainment System to we American gamers), finally goes quietly into that good night. For while it hasn’t had new software or hardware in eons, the Famicom has continued to enjoy hardware support from Nintendo of Japan — only for Japanese Famicoms, of course. Unless I misunderstand, you couldn’t actually send your American NES system to Japan for repairs.

That hardware support will end at the end of October, according to Nintendo Co. And with the Famicom also goes the Super Famicom, the N64, the Gameboy, and the Gameboy pocket. Nintendo, of course, points out that you can continue to enjoy many of the great titles via the Wii’s Virtual Console. This is certainly true, but somehow it just isn’t quite the same as dusting off the good old console and jiggling it into playing a cartridge for you.

At any rate, a salute to the fantastic Famicom for a great quarter century or so.

Oh, it just means they aren't making any more and if they break ur not able to send them off to be fixed. Big deal! I thought this happened like 10 years ago, lol.

wow, wasn't aware that tech support was still offered for those systems, not that you need it. they are all so well built. just remember to blow and you'll be fine :)

First you say they will no longer sell those games on the VC and then you contradict yourself by posting an article which states the exact opposite... You make no sense at all.

your post made absolutely no sense. The Famicom retired? never knew the Japanese NES was still in the game. you're funny.

as for tech support. buy a new pin adapter on ebay and replace it. or better yet pick up a top loader on ebay. Never fails.

Hes wrong, the only site we can trust is Nintendo. All third party sites can not always be correct.

Whoop-di-freakin-do! Even for the people who are upset, it don't take a genius to fix a cartridge port.
