Going to have to disagree there. The cost factor could be waved, as the drivers required to utilize USB mass storage are pretty much standard and open source. If Nintendo so wishes to slip in there own brand name version, then I am sure that some 3rd party manufacturer of current USB hard drive enclosures would be willing to stick the Nintendo name on it for a few extra sales and cut Nintendo a piece of that pie in the process.[DT] said:It just seems like a HD peripheral is a costly (please don't quote MO prices, the target demo will buy at retail) and complex add-on for the Wii market - and to require this for $15 game downloads? Seems like a misstep in the business model.
I have no doubt that it's going to eventually require SD direct play, and agree totally here, however I wouldn't doubt if Nintendo doesn't slip in the optional HDD support at this time as well. I don't think we will see a branded Nintendo USB HDD, but other than taking the time to add it I just don't see any delimiting factors preventing it's integration.[DT] said:The games seem like pretty simple designs that wouldn't require much storage space, *but* I could see a simple patch that allows accessing the SD slot for direct play (vs. the current implementation of using it for backup).

Ahhh... "required", sure - absolutely not. Which is why I believe it is going to happen they will include it as an option along with the SD Card as well.[DT] said:FWIW, the part of my discussion that's critical is the 'business model' part - I don't see Nintendo requiring an expensive peripheral for supporting $15 games.
Exactly, which is probably why there is a delay in including such, look how long it took them to add full keyboard support![DT] said:Will it be done? I'm sure it's on deck - especially with the expansion of the machine to more of an "internet appliance".
lol... I agree, forcing a drive on us would not work. Sliding in the option however, isn't a bad idea. Thanks for clearing up what you meant.[DT] said:Mom: "Terrific, how much is it?"
Johnny: "$15 and it looks real keen!"
Mom: "Well, yeah that's not too bad."
Johnny: "It also requires a $100 external WiiDrive..."
Mom: "Forget it. Go mow the lawn.
Later on in the interview, Fils-Aime discusses the upcoming Wii Ware, which will allow independent developers the chance to develop for the Nintendo Wii. He noted that Nintendo had been overwhelmed with requests for the $2000 USD kits, that Nintendo will not vet the downloadable games and on the issue of extra memory - a hard drive, perhaps - for Wii to hold them all on, he added, “Could there be a market for a Wii hard drive? There certainly could be.”
