Meter under hearts?

What on earth is that green meter for under the hearts? I'm almost done with the game and i've NEVER had a meter under there unless I was underwater with the hero's clothes.

Yeah, that's kinda old.
Probably that was a magic energy meter, but later in development they decided to take magic out of the concept.
In fact, there is this screenshot on the back of the DVD box of the game ^^

So again, you're not going to see the meter ingame.
