What are your favorite applications you like to use? List them and categorizes

for me ..

PC Status and Information: HD Tune, PC Wizard, CPU-z, GPU-z

Security: AVG 7.5, Ad-aware 2008 Plus, Kerio Personal Firewall

Utilities: RocketDock, WinRAR, File Shredder, Auslogics Disk Defrag, Acronis True Image, RivaTuner, CCleaner, VMware, Virtual PC, (ALL) Futuremark PRO products, BOINC (SETI@Home)

Browsers: Firefox

Audo, Video, IM: Video Linux Client (VLC), Fraps, Trillian, Beyond TV, IRC

Media Encoding: Goldwave, VIDEOzilla, Mediacoder, AutoGK, Divx Tools, and a few I'm not going to list do to "rule" conflicts

Documentation and Inventory: Collectors (Movie, Book, Games,), TreeSize Pro
 
PC Status and Information: Gnome has a number of built-in stuff for this. System Monitor and the Sensors Applet are the ones I use the most

Security: My Buffalo hardware firewall and ClamAV and F-Prot to check files before I pass them along to my poor Windows-running friends/family.

Utilities: Too many to mention. My OS is essentially a collection of utilities:

Video: mplayer, Xine, Totem, Ogle, RealPlayer, Kbtv, fxtv, xawtv

IM: Pidgin

Media Encoding: Haven't been doing this but I could present a list of options if someone was interested.

Documentation and Inventory: Just installed GCstar

Web page creation: Kompozer

Graphics editing: Usually Gimp but sometimes Inkscape or Xara depending on the image. I also have Blender but I don't use it.

Usenet newsgroups: Pan

Bittorrent: Transmission

P2P: giFT

Word processing: Usually OpenOffice, sometimes AbiWord

Spreadsheet: Usually OpenOffice, sometimes Gnumeric

World exploration: Google Earth

Virtual machine: QEMU, DOSBox

Podcasts: Castget

Altruism: BOINC

i am so clueless as to what half these things are.

Security: zonealarm, avg anti spyware, avg antivirus.

Browsers: firefox.

Audio: winamp.

Video: see above.

IM: pidgin!

Graphics editing
: photoshop.

P2P
: tba. deleted old one.

Word processing: openoffice.

Spreadsheet: see above.

World exploration
: Google Earth

Ya I wish some of my favorite tools could be transfered, hell give me cat, grep, awk & sed and you can filter any amount of information to whatever you want it to be. (CLI FTW!!) :smilewinkgrin:

Well if the application is not to specific to the OS design and is coded with say a common language like C, (not always) it can be recompiled for a different platform or even hardware architecture.

Pidgin supports MSN if you absolutely must use MSN. At least you don't have to use the MSN client.

Pidgin is just a cover over for the core applications true name, "GAIM". I like the old name better.
