That's a common misconception, even among the "current" Mayan people. Some Mayan calendars that have been discovered only go up to 2012, so people assumed that they predicted that the world would end. It's been discovered that it only goes up to 2012 because there wasn't enough room for more years. Other larger calendars have been found which go past that date.

There's no more chance of an apocalypse on that date than any other time.
