ok, so this is how it is:

to the japanese, jap is a negative, offensive word.

to everyone else; jap is just a short term for japanese, so u dont have to say or type "japanese"

ok, i just really put everything straight, so this thread can be closed

The japanese people who organize the JACL don't count?
ok well lets look at context, calling a japanese person a jap may be offenceive, however every referral to the word Jap that i have seen on these forums has related to a Jap wii or a jap game, please enlighten me as to how a gaming console is offended by a name....?

The same as calling something you dont like "gay" like "i got a speeding ticket and it was SO gay" which is offensive to homosexual men.

edit:
This is what actually inspired me to write this thread. I saw someone use the word in this forum in a negative way and I thought it was ironic considering this is pride month and today was the damn parade!

lol to me the word gay is definately not offensive to homosexual men, also if your going to be that pedantic then the word gay accually means happy.

Ciper have you actually asked a Japanese person if they are offended by the word "Jap" in context of forums or Games?

The term derived from 3 formats of game consoles, PAL, NTSC, JAP, not from some racist overtures as you make it out to be. When most people use it, they're talking about a game. "I've got Mario, it's the Jap version". This is no way a slur on any Japanese people at all.

Edit: As per Brendon: I'm British, therefore a Brit.

You seem to take all your "info" from reliable sources, other than a japanese person themself.

Hell I'm mixed race (or whatever the PC term for it is now) and I know other black people who hate that term "Mixed Race".

I give up. Wiichat supports racial slurs and sexual discrimination as long you aren't personally offended.

Considering that variants of n---er, including the full spelling is allowed, you are surprised by this?

There is a filter in the software, but I think nothing is filtered. Well, **** is. Apparently though it is perfectly acceptable to defeat the censor here, since I see people substituting the ( for the C, with no punishment.

There is a line between common decency and freedom of speech.

And yes, 'Jap' is offensive to those who should matter the most in this conversation. Just as n---er is offensive. Most people here (at least answering in the thread) appear to be unable to grasp that.

The context that is being argued is irrelevant. The abbreviations are created by the same people making the arguments. Show me a reputable media outlet that uses the term 'Jap'.

There seems to be a great amount of ignorance going on here. The term "Jap" was used during World War 2 to discriminate against the Japanese. Americans were so afraid of Japanese spies that they placed Japanese-Americans and immigrants into internment camps with no just cause. Cartoons made during that time also poked fun at the Japanese and used the term "Jap". Those cartoons have since been banned in the US but can be found by scouring the net.

If someone on here feels that a term is offensive, don't start saying things little "you people" and other ignorant phrases. Just because you are not personally offended by something does not mean that others carry the same views and opinions as you. Respect other people and think twice about what you type here. Now that you are aware of an offensive term, you can no longer declare ignorance to it.

For the record, I am white and not a proponent for political correctness. I do however value human decency and if someone asks you to say something in place of something else, have the decency to do it. We are a civilized people, don't degrade yourselves to arguing ignorantly over something like a word.

People shouldnyt get offended as people call me a scot but i dont find that offensive.

Now to sort this out maybe these people should use the word a little less but you cant stop them from being who they are.

I'm Welsh and therefor a Welsh...oh wait...Welshy? Erm...you cant really shorten Welsh without the word not making sense.

No actually wiichat doesn't support racial slurs..

Also you need to understand one thing. When people use the term "Jap" their using it as a shortened form of the word "Japanese". Their not using it as a offensive slur against others.

Lets all agree we are not trying to be racist.

Try and put it in to context next time because if I said "look at at jap with the cross eyes" then I would be racist but if I said "have you got the mario party 8 for the wii?" and he replies "yes but its the Jap version" then would it be racist?

So why can I type out n---er? I refuse to type/say that word, even to make a point. However, I can type it out here, if I wish.

People are misusing the term 'Jap' here, as it is offensive to that population. It does not matter what you are using it as, it only matters what that population thinks of it. Period.
