Homebrew

I don't recommend it. Sony stated they will permanently ban anyone from Home for hacking, modding their consoles. All 3 companies, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony have noted they will go after anyone who mods, or makes hacks. Currently Microsoft is the most active against modders.

You may get away with it for now, but it's only a matter of time before they catch you with a patch update. The only real way to avoid it is to never go online.

However homebrew applications are not always hacks or mods. Perhaps he's talking about "indie" development. Sony, M$ and the Big N have all stated that they will support indie development.

Can't you run linux on the ps3?

I don't own a ps3, but I've been thinking about getting one.

My understanding is that you can boot linux right on to it. The thing is that sony runs a hypervisor on the system that restricts access to 1 of the 7 cell (sub?)processors, so you wouldn't have 100% capabilities of the ps3 unless you hacked the hypervisor (I know nothing about virtualization technologies - is this even possible?)

but yea, you can linux desktop your heart out from what I understand - I don't know if 3d support is there for linux on the ps3 - best case maybe a couple years I'm guessing? if there is a beta 3d project in works let me know about it!

If you are getting any next gen console to hack, mod, or alter it past it's warrenty, you better prepare for it breaking, or the company breaking it for you. If you can accept this reality, then mod away at your own risk.

Modding
Wii Update $250 Brick
360 Update $375 Brick
PS3 Update $600 Brick

Realizing you just killed your console... priceless.
