what do I need to go online with my new wii

I have connected my Wii and my grandson has connected his Wii. We have exchanged friend codes and I can see him and he can see me but when we try to connect we get a message unable to connect (it tries to connect). Internet connections are good, I just can't figure out what we are not doing.
