In Elementary School, we did a project in 3rd grade on that. The class had to each tally how many licks and we took an average of them all. We also tested the different ways to suck a tootsie roll as a variable.

When I did it, if I remember correctly (I had the lick when you put it in your mouth, twist it 180 degrees, and take it out), I got 1,780 licks.
