You remember Pokeballs correct? You threw them and a Pokemon would appear on-screen and perform an attack on characters in the level. Well something very similar to that was revealed today in the form of the Assist Trophy.

An assist trophy is basically a capsule which appears on level at random points during a match and presumably can be turned on and off. Inside these capsules will be guest characters who are seperate from the main roster of characters.

For example in the images, Kirby throws a capsule into the air and a Hammer Bros. appears on screen. The assist character (in this case Hammer Bros.) starts throwing hammers on-screen towards other players.

Back when the early trailer was released for the game, we saw a Nintendog blocking the screen view and this is also an assist trophy. We're assured despite the cute looks, the Nintendog will come in handy at times. Sure...

The idea of the assist trophy is that the creators could included a whole wealth of Nintendo characters who couldn't make it as fighters in the game and we're promised real hardcore fans will only recognise some of those appearing.

Take Samurai Goro, the first official assist trophy character to be revealed today. He was in the F-Zero games and is rival to Captain Falco and when unleashed performs a nasty slash attack on characters.

We're also informed that assist trophies are invincible for the majority, so it is best to run away! Good advice then. Plenty more discussion on this significant update in our topic on the updates. More for you tomorrow.

of course pokeballs are in it, duh, they listed that on the site when groundon was revealed.

Hey Rob, Just Wanted To Tell You That You Said, "Captain Falco" Instead Of "Falcon"
