the final fantasy series totally abandoned it's roots with all the futuristic stuff and weird characters with a storyline that does not follow. The ONLY reason ff is around today is because of the FF7 fanboys.

I have to admit a little bit that the recent FF games have gone a bit too much into the future but it's not necesarily a bad thing. FF IX was one of the best ones out of the lot and so far it's the last one that's been set in the past rather than the futre.
