Getting started in Little King's Story

I read a lot of good things about Little King's Story, so I bought it.
When my granddaughter came to our house, we started a game, but got
stuck trying to leave the house.

There's an arrow indicating the way out, and a cow that keeps pulling
the king away. But we haven't figured out how to get started. We
have talked with the 3 people we have seen.

What did we miss?

I think you might have to sit on your throne again... it's been a while since i've played it, but I'm pretty sure after you talk to all of them Howser gives you instructions to treasure hunt. You may also have to sleep in your room, I really can't remember. Just go back to your throne and sit and talk to Howser again, he will tell you what to do.

I got killed by a turnip, now I need to learn how to find the smoke to retreat.

And to learn the gauges. There's a button on the clock, and symbols on the map thing. I bet though I've gotten far enough to give it over to my grandkids.
