modded wii needs update to use shop channel

I have a modded Wii with nemogamma and homebrew channel. I dont know what the homebrew is for. I need to get into my shop channel but it says there are updates for it and I can't use it I i update. Well I keep hearing about updating a modded wii can brick my Wii. My question is is there anything I can do to get around this. Please someone help.
