If there's a trim around the render you don't like, CTRL+Click the layer your render is on and go Select > Modify > Contract > 1 Px. Right click on the selected part and say "Select Inverse". Now CTRL+X.

Yes. JPG generally isn't as good to save an image in. You can turn the quality all the way up, but me and most other people prefer PNG which can do transparency like GIF only it doesn't have the horrible quality that GIF has. The only thing GIF has over PNG is animation.
