Mysterious Flappy-Flippies??

What's the dealio with the flaps on the back of the classic controller?
I've had mine since for 2 and a half months and i hadn't noticed the little clicky button. Then I found it, and was like, "WHOA. Sweeties."

So, then, well, I asked you guys, and yeah.

Anyone know what they're used for?
