After months, if not years, of speculation, it seems now almost definite (bar official confirmation) that Nintendo will be launch a new HD console at this year’s E3, and possibly even sooner. The exciting news comes from Game Informer, which says that it has heard from “multiple sources” that a new HD console is on the way very soon from Nintendo. According to Game Informer’s sources, the new console will run HD games, with specifications that should be able to compete with those of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, although Game Informer says that it has conflicting reports as to whether the new console’s specs will be better than, or not quite as good as, the other two major consoles.

According to Game Informer, Nintendo is already showing developers and publishers the new console, which is set to launch in late 2012. As to what the console will be called, Game Informer speculates that Nintendo wants to create a whole new brand and that therefore the new console will not be called Wii 2. Nintendo has declined to comment on the matter, as you might expect!

So, long overdue news, but is 2012 already too late?
