The tl;dr version: Astronomers have found a planet which might have liquid water, although it's probably not very Earth-like.

    In before other life.

I cant read all that in my current state of mind
    Care to summarise?
I know theres something in there about different gravity (so if there is anything living on there it will be short)

It's a roughly Earth-sized planet with water. It's probably quite hot and steamy, and there may liquid water (and if so, then there may be life). Also, it orbits a red dwarf.

Yes, this planet is a bit larger than Earth, so its gravity would be stronger.

Just read about this on Gizmodo. They say the water is 400 degrees Fahrenheit. That's so deadly! haha.

Interesting find. Thanks for the post Napalm.

You're confusing it with another discovery (probably one of the planets orbiting Gliese 581, although that is interesting as well). This one was only announced this week, and it would take at least 40 years to get there at the speed of light.

lmfao this is pretty cool. Is there any way for us to know if there's life though?

It's difficult to say. As luck would have it, GJ 1214 b is one of the few known planets which is both nearby and passes in front of its parent star from Earth's point of view, which means we can measure the spectrum of its atmosphere. If there is life there, we might be able to see chemical signs of it in the atmosphere, but no one knows exactly what to look for, because there's no reason to expect life there to be anything like it is here.

yeah that makes sense. Like who's to say life out there is like ours here? different environments and ****. Evolution takes a different path, all that good stuff.
