    Source.

Oh... My... God... Monopoly for Sony. I think this should definitely be an interesting year in pricing. Hopefully this will end up affecting their PS3's pricing by creating more earnings from their Bluray series.

I was just coming here to see if this had been posted yet :)

Grats Sony, and LOL at X-Box HD-DVD drive owners.

It's been pretty clear that blu-ray was going to triumph for a while I think, but this is huge news for Sony.

Sony is just one of the companies behind the Blu-Ray Disc Association and not the only company that makes Blu-Ray players. Yes, they are the biggest backer and have a lot of money invested in it, but it's no more a monopoly than it was for Philips with CDs or Toshiba with DVDs.

While there are dozens of companies involved with the BDA, Sony is the exclusive patent holder for the tech. This means anyone making players or producing media pay Sony for licensing - also Sony had established a more costly license model (vs. HD-D) which was one of the reasons many were hopeful that HD-D would wind up being the standard.

No biggie for me in the long run, I'll just migrate over :)

Actually, in the Microsoft Xbox 360 forum there's another article about Microsoft rumors (?) of going to Bluray now that there's not support for HD-DVD.
