What does Firmware do?

Hey, I finally got a Wii last week and I love it. Mine's console power button does not work at all, like it is more a decoration than a button, but I can turn it off and on via the Wiimotes, and I'll exchange it in a few days, but anyway,

It's not connected to the internet, but I'm curious, what do those firmare updates affect? The Wii itself works perfectly out of the box, so what are the updates for?

Also, is it possible to just play online with one other person or one other Wii or do you just go online and find random people to play with? I'm thinking of a specific person, and can you play all Wii games online? Thank you!

You can play games online with specific people or with random people. To play with specific people, you must exchange friend codes with them and enter them into your friend roster on the particular game. Not all Wii games can play online. Hope this helps.
