Do you need the wi-fi connection to the wii or can i have the ether-net connection cord?

You can use ethernet, but you have to get an adapter since the Wii doesn't have an ethernet port.

Most people who have multiple devices that they want online, use a router.

Upside - Possible to set up a lan network with neighbours, meaning that LAN compatible games like Battalion Wars can be played with neighbours, without the need for the internet.

Downside - It's possible for people to hack into your LAN network. Unless you have security.
