Wii remote player number - fixed?

I was wondering if the remotes stay with the player number permanently. It seems to on mine. I can turn on one remote and it shows as player 3. I was expecting it to be like the xbox 360 where it finds the first available spot.

Just checking to see if the way mine was working was correct. Thanks.

That's strange, usually it should become the first player despite the fact that it's been played as player 2 in the past. If it bothers you, buy a new Wii Remote and see if there are any differences.
