windows xp help

I am running windows xp service pack 3 on my computer with microsoft works word processor version nine. I have the microsoft xml convertor patch also. The problem is when I try to open a doc or docx file with the xml convertor I get an error message saying the conversion failed cause it couldnt save it. Is there any way to fix this? I tried to reload the xml convertor but I get another message saying my computer is unable to open the file. Everything else works fine on my computer.
Any help with this would be appreciated.

I run Windows Vista, and had the works package also.

Not really a fix but, I got annoyed with works saving in .wps format, and not being able to cope with doc files, in the end I had to replace works with my copy of office 2003....I'm happy now....

I sort of solution is to open the .doc files with the windows Wordpad (not notepad) and save it as example.wps
