Super Mario Galaxy 2 just has to be one of, if not the, most anticipated Nintendo Wii games of the year, and with its May 23rd release date rapidly approaching, Nintendo has ramped up the excitement by releasing 12 new screenshots and 3* new pieces of character art, featuring Mario and a golden Yoshi, an inflated blue Yoshi, and what looks like Comet Mario! They’ve also released some new gameplay details.
As with the first Super Mario Galaxy game, Mario is on a quest to collect stars as he travels from galaxy to galaxy, and this time around he also gets to collect new Comet Metals, which unlock harder levels with even more challenges. On some stages, Mario can find an egg, smash it open and hop onto Yoshi’s back, with Yoshi then being able to use his tongue to grab items and shoot them back at enemies, or to fix onto attach points in order to swing across gaps.
In time-honoured fashion, Yoshi is what he eats! If he eats a Dash Pepper, he will get so hot and frenzied that he can run up steep slopes and walls. When he eats a Blimp Fruit, he inflates like a balloon and floats up to reach new heights.
New power-ups available to Mario include a drill for tunneling through planet surfaces. Mario fans should stay tuned as Nintendo is bound to be releasing lots more screenshots and details as launch day approaches.
