scoring points

i noticed in the trailer that some kids were actually flicking the remote while jumping on an enemy to get more points. moreover, when the player did flick the remote, he got responses from the game like, "nice" and "great." i was wondering how to do this and elicit the same response. help?

edit: ok, i found out how to do it, but what's the point?

I havn't got the game though maybe a Multiplayer Option [Once again I don't have the game]

 

[Metric]

The points go towards you score. They're like experience points, or star point from other Paper Marios, but you jut level up once you get a certain amount of points I think the first few levels are 10,000 points each.

edit: I'm level 10 and have 297,845 points. I level up at 300,000.
