Wii U will have AMD Radeon HD, IBM power-based microprocessor on board.

AMD and IBM have both confirmed their support for Nintendo's newly-announced Wii U. Both company's are bringing their latest technology to Nintendo's newest platform.

IBM announced that they will provide an all-new "power-based microprocessor" that packs some of IBM's most advanced technology into an "energy-saving silicon package" that will provide power to Nintendo's brand new console.

We truly value IBM's commitment to support Nintendo in delivering an entirely new kind of gaming and entertainment experience for consumers around the world," said Genyo Takeda, Senior Managing Director, Integrated Research and Development, at Nintendo Co., Ltd.

"We're very proud to have delivered to Nintendo consistent technology advancements for three generations of entertainment consoles," said Elmer Corbin, director, IBM's custom chip business. "Our relationship with Nintendo underscores our unique position in the industry - how we work together with clients to help them leverage IBM technology, intellectual property and research to drive innovation into their own core products."

IBM says it will produce millions of chips for Nintendo featuring its IBM Silicon on Insulator (SOI) technology at 45 nanometers (45 billionths of a meter).

AMD on the other hand will provide the GPU for the upcoming console. It will feature the firms 'custom AMD Radeon HD GPU' which promises to provide the best characteristics of AMD's graphics technology solutions: high-definition graphics support; rich multimedia acceleration and playback; and multiple display support.

Nintendo announced its brand new home console at their E3 press conference earlier this week. It is slated for release in 2012.

i think nintendo should not release the wii u just yet because see how all the other consoles are taking there time in making their product what this release is going to do is once again putting nintendo in last place or maybe pump up to second this time because yes all those things their putting in on the wii u sounds great but isn't it obvious they are putting the same things that the other consoles already have not putting effort in putting in something ahead like built in 3d capabilities and/or putting in a ram that runs higher than 4 ghz making an internal memory or external over 1 terabyte.

You might of forgotten the Wii is currently in "first place"... That, and releasing their console so early is putting clear pressure on Sony and Microsoft. With the Wii U going to have probably a year, maybe even more on the other companies' console, it's going to steal a portion of the market that would otherwise be spread across the consoles in sales. An early release can be extremely beneficial to sales, so long as the product is released early due to well-spent production time, and not because of rushing the product's release. Point being, I think Nintendo already has a foothold in the next gen market, simply from an early release.
