Up to 90 percent of North American Nintendo DS owners are believed to be using the infamous R4 chip to play pirated games, according to the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association.

John Hillier, manager of ELSPA's Intellectual Property Crime Unit, told The Sunday Post that the R4 chip, which bypasses the DS's security system allowing users to play pirated games illegally downloaded from the internet, is hampering Nintendo's software sales and "risking the future of the games industry" by putting legitimate retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers at risk.

"The implications are massive. In America it's thought 90 per cent of Nintendo DS users are playing pirated games because of R4s.

"Crucially, the R4 has shifted the balance of power in the piracy industry to the consumer - and that is hugely worrying. Takings from Nintendo DS games in the US are lower than any other console and no doubt it will have a similar impact [in the UK]. That's why we intend to stop trade in these chips wherever we can."

Use of the chip is not only rife in the US. As previously reported, the R4 has already become one of the most sought after items amongst Japanese consumers in Tokyo's Akihabara electronics district.

Nintendo says it is closely monitoring the situation.

holy cow, i knew a lot of people had the r4 but this is crazy.

Ninety percent?

Wow. Talk about blowing things out of proportion.

I'd say maybe 5 percent AT THE VERY MOST use a slot-1 device.

Because, you have to think about who buys a DS.
95% of the people that have them are under the age of 16 (But my facts may be as accurate as theirs!).

The very few people that aren't so young, more than likely won't find out info on how to use a chip.

Most who do find out, usually don't follow through because they're bored of their DS and don't want to shell out that kind of money when they'll at most buy 2-3 more games in the future.

It's not that the DS economy in games has gone down because of piracy.
It's more so of the same with wii.

Crap companies come out with crap games.
When those sell poor, crap companies come up with crap theories.

That can't be true.. If it was, most of the people that go to my school would have it, and most of them have never even HEARD of the R4. I bet that this is just another of those fake statistic things.

first of all its a belief. and second of all its a belief of the ESA. the feaken ESA. they make ani piracy programs for every type of software and they even close down piracy websites. they are like overlords. trust me if you knew about them like i did, you wouldn't doubt their beliefs.

oh yeah shut down piracy sites for giving out free music which costs too much, or tv series that tv companies wont release on dvd? 95%? i would go so far as to say 35% of DS owners have the know how to install the thing and 25% actually do, although its prbably much lower. 95% is b/s.b/c that would mean 95% have the knowledge and know how to even know that the DS can play those carts. wrong.

Sorry, dude, but this article is bias. I'm 100% sure that only a small percentage of people even know about an R4DS, and even a lower number of people even having one (I'm guessing 3-5%). Majority of DS owners are under the age of 16, the only access they have to getting one, is by the parent. If you really believe 7.5-10 million are using a R4DS, then I have no clue what's going through your mind. If 65% of people use the R4DS, Nintendo would take immediate action and create a whole new DS. There not numb-headed enough to not do so.

-Person must find out about it
-Person must be able to buy it
-Person must be able to know how to use the thing
-Person must be able to invest $60-$100 on the hardware
-Person must be interested in the product

Most DS owners don't even know the R4DS exists.

^ actually its called the ESA.

@RivalDestiny
first of all i dont think the entertainment software association is biased. its stupid to say that they are. nintendo has taken action against this by creating a protection file in the game called the arm7. nintendo would never make another ds just because 65% of americans used the r4ds. it would make the other percent mad and it would criple the market.

There is no way that 90% of DS owners in the USA have a R4DS. LOL bullshit

I bet the number is less than 10%

also where do you find this crap? WTF
