It's more and more their philosophy (for their own games, 3rd parties can do whatever they want) though these days, stated or not. They did go ahead and publish MP3C--very hardcore niche--but they also refused to advertise it, even though they have cash hemorrhaging from every orifice. Otherwise, Nintendo is driving all their products to wider and wider audiences. That's what going casual means.

It's obviously a decent strategy, if not a very complete one (and not one I'm fond of). If you look at the movie industry, R rated movies on average just don't have the earning potential that the average pixar flick does--because when the kids go, they drag their entire families along with them.
