question re: Side Scrolling Shooters

I'm in the mood for a good side scroller. My favorite from the past is probably Gradius III for SNES.

What are your suggestions? (also, I see this as an opportunity to get my first TG-16 game if its actually the best in your opinion).

gradius is on virtual console now. contra 3 i think is one of the best. I'd like to see Total carnage on there, one of the best arcade games i've ever played.

I think Contra is the best, but I don't know.

MAybe I wasnt specific......more like a Gradius style shooter, as opposed to a dude running around with a gun.......

I have gradius, gradius III, and contra III on VC

I was more reffering to the spacey arcade style shooters, and there are a bunch for tg-16
