Using a third-party USB ethernet adaptor?

My Wii is connected to the Internet quite happily using my WiFi wireless router at home, but I would like to have some experience with connecting it to a wired network as well. I was just wondering if it is necessary to buy the official USB ethernet adaptor, or if any adaptor will work? I have several old USB ethernet adaptors here but haven't had the guts to try one yet. I know that often manufacturers such as Nintendo give dire warnings about using third-party accessories, and that sometimes this is just for commercial reasons rather than for technical reasons. They would rather than you buy their brand.

Does anyone have experience using third-party USB ethernet adaptors with the Wii?
