wii wont stop trying to connect

im here trying to connect to the wii shop channel but it just wont stop attempting to connect. and i cant turn off the power. if i take out the power cord will that damage the sytem?

Just press and hold down the POWER button until it powers off....mine had done it a few times and so far my system seems ok.
