Will my wii be damaged?

I am using a wii lan adapter to connect by wii directly to an ethernet port on my modem as i do not own a router (i had no need before i got the wii).

I was wondering when i connect my wii to the internet channel (or any of the internet services) could i be damaged as i am not using a router with a firewall?

Also if i do need to buy a router, which wired on should i buy? (it has to be wired so i can use that lan adapter i already have)
