weed isnt for everyone and is something to be respected as with any substance that god put on earth for our use. when people start abusing and taking things lightly is when the problem begins.

On November 3rd 2005, voters in Denver, Colorado made it the first major city to legalize small amounts of marijuana. Even though state law make it a crime to hold marijuana, the passed law is the wind in the sails for the legalization of marijuana. This is Colorado a major state saying, “Hold on, maybe our current marijuana laws don’t make sense.” The fact is they don’t. A major issue of why marijuana has been an outlawed substance is due to all of the so called health issues that are associated with the consumption of this drug (“Up in Smoke”).
Those against the use of marijuana have held these three main health issues as to why it sould be an illegal substance
1. Marijuana causes negative results on the brain.
2. Marijuana damages the reproductive system.
3. Marijuana is a gateway drug.
“THC, the main active ingredient in marijuana, binds to and activates specific receptors, known as cannabinoid receptors. There are many of these receptors in parts of the brain that control memory, thought, concentration, time and depth perception, and coordinated movement. By activating these receptors, THC interferes with the normal functioning of the cerebellum, the part of the brain most responsible for balance, posture, and coordination of movement.The hippocampus, which is involved with memory formation, also contains many cannabinoid receptors. Studies have suggested that marijuana activates cannabinoid receptors in the hippocampus and affects memory by decreasing the activity of neurons in this area. The effect of marijuana on long-term memory is less certain, but while someone is under the influence of marijuana, short-term memory can be compromised. Further, research studies have shown chronic administration of THC can permanently damage the hippocampus of rats, suggesting that marijuana use can lead to permanent memory impairment”(National Institute on Drug Abuse).
“Some research studies suggest that the use of marijuana during pregnancy may result in premature babies and in low birth weights. Studies of men and women may have a temporary loss of fertility. These findings suggest that marijuana may be especially harmful during adolescence, a period of rapid physical and sexual development”(Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse).
"Marijuana users are sixty-six times more likely to use cocaine subsequently than subjects who have never consumed marijuana. This 1990 survey of PRIDE documents further the fact that marijuana is a "gateway" drug to more destructive dependency-producing drugs such as heroin or cocaine. Such a most significant risk of escalating from marijuana to cocaine was reported by Kandel and colleagues in 1975. Clayton and Voss (U.S. Journal of Drug and Alcohol Dependence, Jan. 1982) confirmed Kandel's observation and reported that the risk for a marijuana user to progress to cocaine consumption is ten times greater than the risk of a heavy tobacco smoker to develop cancer of the lung. Dr. Herbert Kleber reports that 75% of frequent users of marijuana have used cocaine at least once. It is a fact that the major epidemic of cocaine consumption besetting the country since the mid-eighties was preceded by the marijuana epidemic of the seventies”( Gateway Theory).
The claim that marijuana holds a negative effect on the brain came from the studies performed by Dr. Robert Heath. In 1982 The Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences reviewed Dr. Heath’s studies and printed their result. Heath’s study was highly criticized for its small sample size (Heath had only experimented with four monkeys). The experiment failed to control experimental bias, and the results led to the misidentification of a normal monkey brain structure as “damaged”(Hagar). Recent studies were conducted by two independent research groups. The first, conducted by Dr. William Slikker, examined some 64 rhesus monkeys, half of which were exposed to daily or weekly doses of marijuana smoke for
a year. The other, by Gordon T. Pryor and Charles Rebert at SRI International in Menlo Park, California looked at over 30 rhesus monkeys that had inhaled marijuana one to three times a day over periods of 6 to 12 months. Neither study found evidence of structural or neurochemical changes in the brains of the monkeys when examined a few months after cessation of smoking(Slikker).
Around the time that most experiments where being done on marijuana and the effects of it on the body.Dr. Gabriel Nahas began to experiment with tissue cells and the effects marijuana had on them.In his completed work he made the claim that marijuana damages the reproductive system. Yet, Nahas only experimented with cells from animals that had been exposed to near fatal amounts of cannaboids. Instead of doing a more controlled experiment, Nahas used test subjects that were likely to give him the results that he wanted.
A perfect opposition to the belief that marijuana is a “gateway” drug would be a real world example of what happened in Holland. In the 1970’s the Dutch partially legalized marijuana. Ever since then, hard drug uses (such as heroin and cocaine) have substantially declined (Hagar). In 1993 Rand Corporation began study that compared drug use in
States that had decriminalized marijuana versus those that had not, through their studies they
found that where marijuana was more available hard drug abuse as measured by emergency room
episodes decreased greatly. In short, what science and actual experience tell us is that marijuana tends to substitute for the much more dangerous hard drugs like alcohol, cocaine, and heroin (Hagar).
In conclusion there are not enough substantially health related problems that would make marijuana an illegal drug. The research and evidence that anti drug campaigns use are highly inaccurate, vague, and even bias. The acutal research dealing with health issues have never really been explained due to the conservitive media putting a negative spin on every anti-drug campiagn. People should be able to and are given the right to make their own educated choices, but how are people expected to make there own educated descions if falsely misrepersented facts are all they have to go on.If there is a reason for why marijuana should be illegal, then the so called health reasons that go along with the use of marijuana should not be a factor.
