dumbass

Corey - certainly some food for thought...

For all intents and purposes, witch-hunts of some sort or another are a regular part of human society. Not to say they're right, as by their very definition they're misled acts desperation, but it's impossible to totally remove such prejudice and foolish scaremongering in the same way it's impossible to remove violence and immoral behaviour from the face of this planet. We, as a race of beings, have been trying to blame everything but ourselves for our own foibles, pretending that whatever is in the popular eye is the cause for horrific things that have existed since we've been able to walk and communicate. The internet is funny in the sense that it would have you believe everything is new, when in reality it's just made the world a smaller place and more hyper-aware of the horrible things that are out there compared to the days where we previously only relied on word-of-mouth and journals.

The fact is that censorship always defeats its own purpose, for it creates, in the end, the kind of society that is incapable of exercising real discretion. ~Henry Steele Commager

Certain people will always fear what is new, high profile - or they just plain don't understand or have taken the time to understand whatever it is, will always crow for censorship claiming moral corruption!!

Censorship only exists because we as a society find it useful to have guidelines for content - is it how it should be? I am open minded on the situation personally, guidelines should be in place to protect when abuse; or the possibility for abuse; of content can lead to genuine harm - BUT how can we decide this via politicians and religious leaders alone? The ambiguity of interpretation by individuals in power doesn't always lead us up the correct path - take the current drug laws in the UK - "ALL drugs are evil and should be banned" - government then takes referendum on downgrading cannabis and debates legalisation because...it's a soft drug?!? Surely this contradicts the argument.

Exactly the same as pornography, we sell porn magazines out of the reach of children (top shelf) but proceed to advertise everything from sweets to kiddies clothing in a thinly veiled pseudo-sexual nature - children dressed up as adults, girls with lipstick and makeup on, low cut tops etc etc. Is this not more corrupting than internet access on a Nintendo console? I think it is definitely...

Encapsulate content with a Chinese-whispers reputation then any technology with ease of access to any content will be tarred with the same brush - in these heady times of convergence we will find more and more outlandish claims that harmful content will be available to more and more minors and pedophiles alike....won't it???

After all whoever shouts loudest and longest really can sway public opinion...CAN'T THEY!!! These issues come and go like the tide, this week porn next week obesity week after illiteracy...and so it goes on and on, I personally have the outlook that most porn mags have a lot of intelligent articles in them - if all these kiddies being corrupted by the images read the articles on "diversifying your portfolio in the current socio-economic climate...TOPLESS" then the world would be a less ignorant place. :ciappa:

We all know Nintendo have built in parental controls to restrict mature content but how many of these naysayers have bothered to set them up and see how effective they are??? After all these groups must do some 'research' into the subject they are sqwarking about - i.e. sit and look for porn on the internet - I presume it's not a tech-savvy 13 year old doing it for them :ihih:
Although if they need a 'special' adviser then I am available and my rates are pretty reasonable let me tell you....!

So what if a few over-reactive souls think Wii is a gateway for porn. They'll use whatever is popular as a cheap way of gathering eyeballs, then eventually move on to the next target - which I believe will be a combination of the new Spider-Man film, Pirates of the Caribbean 3, the final Harry Potter book and possibly how Microsoft Vista changes pornographic images into virtual reality holograms that cam be transmitted DIRECTLY INTO YOUR BRAIN. Wii, and indeed, we, will all survive it. We wouldn’t have got as far as we have if that wasn’t the case already.

I run vista and personally am desperately waiting for this to happen  the WOW certainly hasn't stared...yet!!!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got a date with Jenna-… erm, I mean, a date with my Wii… I mean… oh, forget it. You know what I mean. Either way, it's like Leonidas says in 300; "we're in for one wild night," indeed.

I'll take Slyvia Saint as a started for ten - you can keep Jenna erm I mean the Wii!!!
Jeez I must be more corrupted than a Windows 95 file system....!! There truly is no salvation for me - wish me luck as I stagger down the path of 'soddem' & 'givememore-a' :hand:

Agreed there – a lot of it tends to come off as eating its own face. Devices stacked up for easily consumable soapboxes. Could be a chicken/egg scenario – who's to blame, the politician for using such easily exploited paranoia or the public for being so easily exploited in the first place?

Yeah, this sort of thing tends to bother me. Part of me, the often loud cynical part, says that gaming is an easy target because not enough people in positions of corrupt and wealthy power have their claws in the medium enough to make enough money from it and thus give it the pass other forms seem to get – on top of the fact it's relatively new and thus a 'threat' to established socio-norms.

:ciappa:

Heh, I think we're slanting back to the suggestion that all these articles should be done naked – it would at least gather more eyeballs and actually get people reading instead of mentally using their (clearly faulty) skim functions… ;)

You'll need Bill to personally 'turn it on' for you, or something. So I heard.

Maybe.

:p

Lmao, salvation is where you find it… that's my line of reasoning, anyway :p And I saw someone put up a recent awards pic (what the hell awards are those, I dont know) of Jenna over at Brian Bendis' boards, she's in a pretty bad way. That's what that industry does to you, I guess. I still haven’t recovered from my hey-day…

(Sh'yeah right ;))

Traci Lords for Prime Minister

Corey,

As ever thanks for the reply.

– who's to blame, the politician for using such easily exploited paranoia or the public for being so easily exploited in the first place?
The whole point is, of course, is that - we are certainly attempting to be exploited by leaders, who to be fair, are obviously very little in-touch with these issues on a ground level [Execpt Tony Ben, he knows more about technology than Gates, Jobs & Woz all put together:lol:]

Some get suckered in - i.e. Super PornoTalk Group (dial 69 as their extension:sick: ) - but in the main I certainly think we have hit the age of ignoring politicians due to bullsh*t fatigue....good and proper! Scaremongering is certinaly ephemeral now-a-days.

Yeah, this sort of thing tends to bother me. Exactly....money! If Labour made the PS3 then it would be the greatest console ever to be made and you wouldn't need a congestion charge or ID card to buy one! IT WOULD BE LAW TO OWN IT..! :prrr:
[PS3 - that's not to say it isn't of course!]

If I shout loud and long about consoles and the internet corrupting tiny minds by their watching very good looking [consenting] women, participating in what would seem like a good way to pass a Sunday afternoon (but strangely enough it always seems that the other person doesn't exist above the waist..I've been told)..ahem anyway, then won't that draw attention to whatever organisation and or cause that I am involved in!! Oof subversive or what! ;)

Of course young children shouldn't be subjected to pornography and all the moral implications it brings but they shouldn't be subjected to pre-watershed tv soap operas (just because they are crap not because of another spurious reason) - they shouldn't be subjected to a whole heap of morally degrading content in the media and advertising, sex sells - or did they forget the BJ that a Cadbury flake got every advert! etc etc etc, hell no-one complains about programs like deal or no deal which glorifies begging to all intents and purposes...:ciappa:

Heh, I think we're slanting back to the suggestion that all these articles should be done naked – it would at least gather more eyeballs and actually get people reading instead of mentally using their (clearly faulty) skim functions… ;)

Nudey articles - hmmmm :frown2: ermmm, tsk, oooooo, eeeee ahhh (Cheesus I've just realised what those noises could be interpretated as.. )
No definately not..!
