can not sign into messenger

everytime i sign onto live i get connection and am able to play games and download stuff but i get a message that says can not sign into messenger what the hell does that mean

Do you have your messenger up on your PC? If not, then it possibly has something to do with Live. I sent my 360 in for repair today, so I can't check.
